In this module, you will learn about Europe's geography, natural resources, and climate. Over the next two weeks, you will complete several activities in class, at home, and in the computer lab that will help you to understand Europe's geography and the role climate, resources, and physical features play in the development of countries. You will have choices on some of the activities and will decide if you want to work alone or with others. All activities are due on Friday, March 7th. You must turn in your reflection journal on Friday March 7 before the end of class period.

Objective of this module:
1. Identify the major physical features of Europe with 80 accuracy on quiz. 2. Create a RAFT on European country of choice (with rubric for guidelines and grading) that demonstrates knowledge of climate, natural resources and physical features. 3. Define vocabulary and geographical terms used in module lessons with 80% accuracy as shown from Frayer model handout.
Georgia Performance Standards
Standard SS6G8: The student will be able to locate selected features of Europe.
a. Locate on a world map and regional political-physical map: the Danube River, Rhine River, English Chanel, Mediterranean Sea, European Peninsula, the Alps, Pyrenees, Ural Mountains, the Iberian and Scandinavian Peninsulas.
b. Locate on a world and physical political map the countries of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, and United Kingdom.
Standard SS6G10: The student will explain the impact of location, climate, natural resources, and population distribution in Europe.
a. Compare how the location, climate, and natural resources of the United Kingdom and Russia affect where people live and how they trade.
b. Compare how the location, climate, and natural resources of Germany and Italy affect where people live and how they trade.
Activities and Assignments:
1. Log into Edgenuity. Go to the social studies segment, 6th grade, European Geography. Click on the link and view the Vocabulary section. View the section on vocabulary and use the Frayer model handout to define the vocabulary terms. Complete the Frayer model handout for each term by including a visual, characteristics, and term used correctly in a sentence.
2.Working with a partner or in groups of 3 or 4 students,complete the map work assignment. You will receive a copy of 2 blank maps of Europe. You will need to identify all of the physical features listed on the handout on one map and all of the countries/capitals listed on the second map. Follow the directions on the handout carefully.
3. Whole class discussion on physical features of Europe. In your reflection journal, answer question 1-3 in the Handouts document.
4. Go to the Let's Explore Europe website link. Select to either read the booklet (pages 1 - 34) or play the game to learn information about Europe's natural resources and climates. As you read, answer the questions on the Let's Explore Europe Handout found in the handouts below.
5. RAFT activity. For this activity, you can work alone or with a group. Select one of these four countries: Germany, United Kingdom, Russia, Italy.
Use the RAFT handout for ideas if the following Role, Audience, and Format choices do not appeal to you:
ROLE: 1.) Illustrator 2.) Tour Guide 3.) Travel Writer for a travel magazine AUDIENCE: 1.) elementary school aged student 2.) Group of Tourists 3.) Magazine readers FORMAT: 1.) picture book 2.) presentation that includes pictures (can be a PPT, Prezi or oral) 3.) magazine article with pictures TOPIC: Give a description of the physical features, natural resources, climate, and agriculture of the European country you selected.
Use any notes/handouts from your classwork to assist you. You can find all kinds of information about your country by visiting the CIA World Fact Book website and/or the GALE E-Reference Library on the school website. Make sure that your pictures used in your work are copyright free. The link on copyright free images below can help you find pictures. You can always use illustrations.
